Research the similarities and differences between the business cultures of America and Japan. Using some of the below questions as a guide, write a 150 to 200 word comment in the space below and be prepared to discuss your ideas in the next class.

1) Which rules of etiquette cross both cultures. Why do you think this is true?

2) What customs and rules of behavior are different between the two countries? How do explain the differences?

3) What are the origins and significance of some of these customs and rules of etiquette? How are they evolving in the modern era? (e.g., Is the handshake overtaking the bow in international business settings?)

4) To what degree are the respective rules important? Would a breaking of any of these rules sour a business relationship or jeopardize a business deal?

5) Which party should observe the other’s rules of etiquette, to what degree, and under what circumstances (i.e., visitor versus guest, buyer versus seller, etc.)?

6) Make note of anything else you feel is interesting or worthy of discussion about any of these rules that has not been addressed in the previous questions.

and compare (show similarities) and contrast (show differences) between America and Japan. Write your points in the comment section below for discussion during class. Think about the following questions when writing your comments:

–  How do you explain both the similarities and differences between the two countries?

– Which aspects of the etiquette areas that you chose seem unusual to you?

– Do you believe that it is necessary for one to follow the rules of etiquette of another country while visiting there? Why or why not?

(NOTE: Limit your choices to everyday (i.e., non-business) etiquette only. We will cover business etiquette next week.)
